At just 5 km from the Atlantic Ocean the Yonder Hill vineyards benefit from cool sea breezes, which extend the ripening season giving rich concentrated fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes are hand picked, fermented and aged separately. The resulting wine has a deep red colour with a full, meaty palate and spicy, rich well structured tannins.

Jacquart is a relatively new brand, launched in 1962, yet it has quickly built up a reputation for offering very reliable Champagnes that offer astonishing quality at the bottom end of the price scale. Demonstrating true vintage characteristics, the Jacquart style is for a pleasantly soft fruitiness, fine persistent bubbles and a noticeable toastiness as the wine matures.

Clos d'Yvigne 'Le Rouge et Le Noir' 2004, Côte de Bergerac, at MajesticWine
The winemaker, Patricia Atkinson, best selling author of 'The Ripening Sun', vinifies her wines using traditional methods to extract maximum fruit flavours, colours and tannins. The wine is then aged in oak for up to 2 years. With 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, showing an array of rich, ripe fruit, blackberries and notes of cedar, this dense and savoury wine is aging beautifully. Perfect with lamb.

Rioja Blanco Capellania 1998, Marqués de Murrieta, at MajesticWine
Unusual and distinctive, this wine was oak matured for over 3 years imparting lashings of vanilla, toasty characters. Fruity taste sensations on the palate render it a gutsy match to spicy lamb or paella. The smooth finish just lingers on and on.

Rioja Reserva 2002, CVNE, at Majestic Wine Warehouse
A soft luxurious wine, mid garnet in colour with a lovely brambly nose and a hint of Bovril. Nuances of warm leather, caramel and coffee cream over rich autumn fruit. Excellent balance and a lingering finish, try served with grilled lamb, duck and most rich meats.

Sablet Le Rêve de Marine 2004, Domaine de Piaugier, at Majestic Wine Warehouses
Following age-old family tradition, Piaugier named this wine 'Marine's Dream' after their youngest daughter. Being between twenty and forty-five years old, the vines are in their full, rich, plentiful prime. Deep purple in colour, the nose shows violets at first, then gives way to more complex, spicy aromas. With soft, silky tannins, this well rounded and harmonious wine is already very appealing. Enjoy with steak and strong cheeses.

Created to mark the house's centenary this harmonious wine strikes a fine balance between maturity and freshness. Excellent with scallops.

Barbera d'Asti DOC 2005, De Forville, at Majestic Wine Warehouse
From an excellent producer, this is a Barbera that can be drunk now or aged for a couple of years. The twelve months the wine spent ageing in oak barrels has added complexity to the typical qualities of the grape. The nose shows intense cherry aromas and hints of vanilla, which follow through to the crisp, yet smooth palate. An ideal red to drink with anitpasti.
