Richard Maunsell held the position of Chief Mechanical Engine at the Southern Railway from 1923 until 1937. Despite the SR's trailblazing emphasis on electrification during Maunsell's time, he was still able to design some very special main-line passenger locomotives. First successfully developing Urie's flawed N15 Class into the King Arthur Class, Maunsell then went on to create the impressively powerful Lord Nelson and Schools classes. Schools Class: faced with the challenge of the restricted Hastings line, Richard Maunsell responded with the Schools Class. Three remain in preservation all displaying the features that made Maunsell's design unique on the Southern Railway. King Arthur Class: Legendary locomotives named for a legendary hero, the King Arthur's are held in high esteem by enthusiasts. Amazing rare footage from the 1930s and BR era, as well as film of Sir Lamiel in preservation, tells the story of these fascinating locomotives. Lord Nelson Class: Quite specialised firing requirements made the Lord Nelson Class a tricky customer for many a locomotive crew. However, when handled expertly this class demonstrated excellent reliability and impressive power on the Southern Railway.
